So, Chelsea, how do we begin to explore the delicious world of stout beer? Especially, for our newcomers to beer.

Chelsea: Each style offers a unique experience, to different tastes and preferences. Whether you're after something sweet, robust, smooth, or complex, there's a stout style that's likely to intrigue your palate.

We’ve crafted a trendy list for you to study and discuss on your stout exploring adventures.

1. Milk Stout: A sweet stout that includes lactose, a sugar derived from milk, giving it a creamy texture and slightly sweet flavor.

For those who enjoy a balance of sweet and creamy with the traditional stout richness.

2. Liz: Coffee Stout: Perfect for coffee lovers. It's like having the best of both worlds - Infused with coffee, this stout blends the rich, roasted flavors of dark beer with the boldness of coffee.

6. Liz: Russian Imperial Stout: A strong, dark stout with high alcohol content, featuring rich, complex flavors of dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee. Perfect for slow sipping and savoring.

  1. Liz: How to celebrate stout month in Colorado this year

    1. And if you’re not in Colorado, ask your favorite brewery what they’re doing for Stout month!!

February in Colorado is celebrated as Stout Month, featuring a variety of events and new stout releases across the state. Key highlights include the Super Stout Showcase at River North Brewery, VantaBrews at Cerebral Brewing, a Vintage Stout Tasting at Wiley Roots Brewing, and special stout tappings at Hops and Pie and Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery.

  1. Chelsea: The National Black Brewers Association Explodes Into Craft Beer With a Bang

    1. In honor of black history of month, we wanted to take the time to highlight a milestone in the craft brewery world.

The National Black Brewers Association (NB2A) marks a significant step in diversifying the predominantly white craft beer industry.

With less than 1% of US breweries being Black-owned, the NB2A, founded by Kevin Johnson, aims to increase African American presence in brewing.

It focuses on promoting the Black brewing community, increasing African American involvement at all levels, advocating for effective policies, and honoring the history of African American brewing.

The association, led by experienced industry figures, plans to celebrate National Black Brewers Day and strengthen relationships with Black legislators.

This initiative is a major move towards inclusivity and representation in the craft beer industry.

Liz: And that brings us to the end of this week's BREW NEWS. From the dark, inviting stouts of our nation’s celebrated Stout Month to the groundbreaking strides of the National Black Brewers Association, we've journeyed through the heart of what makes craft beer so much more than just a beverage.

  1. Sips of Wisdom: Dark Depths: The Stout Story from Grain to Glass

Chelsea: Welcome to 'Sips of Wisdom,' your door to the hidden stories behind the pint.

Have you ever wondered what transforms a simple ale into the deep, complex stout, or why the very name 'stout' speaks to a beer's robust character?

Liz: From the historic barrels of 'butt beer' to the global phenomenon of Guinness, join us as we pour over the fascinating origins and evolution of stout. Ready to deepen your beer knowledge and toast to the legends of the brew? Let's dive into the stout-hearted world of beers, where history and flavor meld into every glass.

Chelsea: What kind of beer is a stout?

A stout is a dark-style ale made with roasted barley. Originally called “stout porters,” stouts emerged from the porter style, only stronger and with more depth of flavor.

Stouts are characterized by their dark brown to black color and low carbonation levels, typically accompanied by a creamy mouthfeel.

Liz: Why is beer called stout?

The term stout was used in the 18th century to identify a beer with high alcohol content. The term “stout porter” — stout’s original name — was used in reference to dark beers with ABVs higher than 7 percent.

Chelsea: Ok, so what does ‘stout’ mean?
Originally it meant proud or brave, but after the 14th century it took on the connotation of ‘strong.’

Liz: What is the history of American Stout?
• the american version can trace its history back to England and a beer known as ‘butt beer’, so named because of the large wooden casks, or butts it was aged in.

Chelsea: What is the most popular brand of stout?

Guinness Draught is undeniably the world’s most popular brand of stout. Every day, over 10 million pints are sold, and each year, an estimated 1.5 billion pints of Guinness are poured worldwide.

Liz: Today, we've traversed the origins of stout, unraveled the meaning behind its name, celebrated the global legacy of Guinness, and dipped into the American stout's unique heritage. Each story, each fact, is a testament to beer's unending capacity to evolve, inspire, and bring us together.

Until next time, keep savoring the richness of beer's history, one sip at a time.
