Ale Academy: [Perfect Pour & Glass: Master Your Beer]

Chelsea: Have you ever wondered why your beer never tastes quite the same as it does in a brewery or pub? The secret might just be in the pour.
Let's discuss the art of pouring beer. A proper pour is key to enjoying a beer's full flavor.

Begin by tilting your glass at a 45-degree angle, then slowly pour the beer down the side. As you reach the midway point, gradually straighten the glass, allowing a creamy head to form. This technique will release the beer's aromas and ensure a great tasting experience.

Liz: Certain beers, especially nitros, benefit from a "hard pour" technique. This method involves pouring the beer directly into the center of the glass from a higher distance, rather than tilting it. This aggressive pouring style induces a thicker head, enhancing the beer's aroma and flavor release. Nitro beers, known for their smooth and creamy texture, particularly thrive with this approach, as it activates the nitrogen, creating a cascading effect and a fuller sensory experience.

Chelsea: Now, let's talk about the different glassware options. Matching the right glassware to the beer style elevates the drinking experience by enhancing its unique characteristics.

A tulip glass is ideal for highlighting aromas, making it great for aromatic beers like IPAs. Pilsner glasses, with their tall and slender shape, highlight the clarity and bubbles of lighter beers.

Liz: Additionally, Snifter Glasses are designed for beers with complex aromas and high alcohol content, such as barleywines or strong ales. The wide bowl and narrow top trap the aromatics, allowing for a fuller sensory experience with each sip.

Mastering the perfect pour and understanding the significance of glassware are essential skills for any beer enthusiast. Whether it's the gentle tilt for a smooth pour or choosing the right glass to enhance your beer's aroma and appearance, these techniques elevate your drinking experience from ordinary to extraordinary.

Hoptimistic Inquiries: [Questions About Brewery Tours! ]

Liz: Welcome back to Hoptimistic Inquiries, where today we're diving into the world of brewery tours. Gone are the days of the straightforward, free peek behind the scenes. Now, breweries are upping the ante, turning tours into immersive experiences complete with souvenirs like a branded pint glass and, yes, a complimentary beer to enjoy.

Chelsea: What is a Purchased Brewery Tour?

A brewery tour is your customer’s golden ticket to the heart of where craft beer magic happens. It's not just a walk-through; it's an educational adventure through your brewing process, from grain to glass. As brewery employees, we saw it as a chance to share our passion, process, and dedication to the craft with our guests, and fellow beer enthusiasts.

Liz: How Do You Customers Find Your Brewery Tour?

Finding these tour expeditions should be as easy as tapping on your phone. Customers can start with a quick search online or head straight to your brewery's website. Social media platforms are also a goldmine for tour announcements and event pages.

Chelse: How Do I Promote My Brewery Tour?

Promotions on brewery tours often pop up on social media, in newsletters, and sometimes in collaboration with local tourism sites. Providing a newsletter from your brewery is like offering a backstage pass to all things craft beer, including exclusive discounts and early-bird tour bookings. So, don’t forget to encourage early sign-up for those.

Liz: How Much Should I Charge?

The charge can vary, as much as what you’re offering throughout the tour. So check out your costs. Typically, you're looking at a range from $10 to $30, for your customers it’s a small price for the richness of the experience you’re offering, the knowledge imparted, and the take-home swag. Remember, your guests are not just buying a tour; they’re having an experience, creating a memory, and supporting the craft beer community.

Chelsea: How Do Customers Sign Up?

Securing a spot on your brewery tour should be straightforward. Have customers visit your brewery's website for a tour section and book directly from there, or a tour partner site. E.g.: TripAdvisor or Air BnB. Never underestimate the power of an in-person signup or over the phone. For special tours with limited availability, promote booking in advance.

Liz: Remember that brewery tours offer more than just a glimpse behind the scenes. They're an invitation to connect with craft beer on a deeper level, to learn, to taste, and to walk away with something more than just a buzz—a richer appreciation for the art and science of brewing.

Sips of Wisdom: [February Facts - Black History & Love]

Liz: Welcome to Sips of Wisdom! Today we will discover how Peoples Brewing Company became a beacon of racial and economic empowerment, how White Lion Brewing weaves history and community into its craft, and we’ll uncover the ancient, festive origins of Valentine’s Day. Let's toast to stories of resilience, heritage, and love—all poured into a glass of beer.

Chelsea: #1. People’s Brewing Company: Did you know Peoples Brewing Company, founded in 1970 as Wisconsin's first Black-owned brewery, aimed to empower the Black community through ownership and representation in brewing, yet faced insurmountable challenges and closed just two years later?

Led by Theodore “Ted” Mack, the brewery aimed to offer beer symbolizing racial and economic empowerment for the Black community. Despite Mack's innovative vision, Peoples Brewing encountered significant obstacles, including racist backlash and challenges in market expansion, which led to its closure in 1972.

Liz: #2. White Lion Brewing Company - Springfield, MA:

Did you know that White Lion Brewing Company, established in 2014 by Raymond Berry, Jr., is not only Springfield, MA's first beer brand and Black-owned brewery but also ties back to the city's role in the Underground Railroad? Inspired by African folklore, the White Lion symbolizes prosperity and aims to uplift the community and craft brewing industry, especially among Black and brown people.

Chelsea: #3: Valentine’s Day: Does Valentine’s Day have a beer-related history? One fun fact about Valentine's Day is that it is believed to have originated from the Roman festival of Lupercalia (loo·pr·ka·lee·uh), held in mid-February. This ancient festival celebrated fertility and included various rites and matchmaking lotteries to pair men and women. Where they most likely served beer. Over time, it transformed into the day of romance we know today, with St. Valentine becoming its patron saint.

Today we're reminded that behind every beer is a story of tradition, struggle, and community, inviting us to pour another glass and toast to the rich, diverse tapestry of brewing history and cultural celebrations. Thanks, for joining us.

Brews & Bites Segment: [Southern Sun Pub: Stout Month Flight Pairing]

Liz: Join us on our culinary quest inspired by our latest adventure at Southern Sun Pub & Brewery during Stout Month, where spicy buffalo cauliflower wings met the minty chocolate notes of Girl Scout Stout, hearty poblano chili danced with the toasty vibes of Montserrat Stout, and a creamy Exrta Fancy grilled cheese found its perfect match in the rich Korova Cream Stout.

Welcome to 'Brews n Bites,' our celebration of the pairings born from the heart of stout month festivities, where every bite and sip was a journey into flavors yet to be told.

Chelsea: Appetizer Pairing Highlights:

  • Cauli-Wings: The freshness and slight bitterness of the cauliflower, enhanced by the vegan kolsch tempura batter, beautifully complemented the minty freshness and chocolate depths of the Girl Scout Stout.

The contrast between the spicy buffalo sauce and the creamy sweetness of the Korova Cream Stout also offered an intriguing flavor experience.

Liz: Chili Pairing Highlights:

  • Jerry’s Vegan Chili: The hearty and spicy profile of the chili, with its poblano peppers and aromatic vegetables, paired well with the Montserrat Foreign Export Stout’s dry and toasty character and enhanced the chili's depth.

The Moloko Plus Coffee Cream Stout, with its smooth coffee notes, also had an elevated effect on the chili’s complexity.

Chelsea: Grilled Cheese Pairing Highlights:

  • Extra Fancy Grilled Cheese: The creamy and tangy nature of the Havarti and goat cheese, combined with the sun-dried tomatoes and arugula, was a match made in heaven with the creamy and rich Korova Cream Stout.

Alternatively, the complex and hoppy Trickster Stout added an unexpected but delightful contrast to the sandwich.

Liz: As our 'Brews n Bites' journey, sparked by the rich discoveries of Stout Month at Mountain Sun Ales Pub & Brewery, closes, we're left salivating over the memory of every bite of our pairings. From the spicy kick of the buffalo cauli-wings harmonized with the minty stout, to the complex tango of Jerry’s vegan chili and toasty Montserrat stout, each pairing was a testament to the inventive spirit of craft beer and cuisine at Southern Sun.

Chelsea: We hope this adventure inspires you to explore the possibilities of beer pairings in your culinary adventures.
