Brews & Bites Segment:
Liz: We’re always excited for eats and drinks, and that is because it is near and dear to us, the food and beer pairing!
Ok, Let’s get into it… this is BREW & Bites!
This week we’re going to malts and how they effect our favorite eats and treats
Chelsea, why don’t you start us out with some pairings:
Chelsea: We’re going to get into the fascinating world of different malts and discover how they impact our favorite beers and foods. Malts, the backbone of many beers, are grains that undergo a meticulous process of germination and drying. This process, known as malting, gives the grains their unique characteristics and flavors.
Liz: First up, let's talk about the pale malt. Derived from lightly kilned barley, it imparts a crisp and clean taste to beers, making it the go-to choice for classic styles like Pilsners and Pale Ales. Its light color also adds a touch of brightness to your culinary creations.
Chelsea: Now, let's explore the darker side of malts. The roasted malt, with its rich color and robust flavor, adds depth and complexity to stouts and porters. Imagine the velvety smoothness of a chocolatey stout or the intense aroma of a coffee-infused porter. These malts elevate not just your beers but also your desserts and savory dishes.
Liz: Next, we have the caramel malt. As its name suggests, it brings a delightful sweetness and caramel-like aroma to beers. Its malty richness pairs beautifully with roasted meats, adding a tantalizing depth of flavor to your culinary endeavors.
Chelsea: Let's not forget about the smoky malt. This distinct malt, made from kilned barley sometimes dried over a peat fire, imparts a unique smoky flavor reminiscent of a campfire. It elevates your favorite Scotch Ales and lends a touch of intrigue to grilled meats and even desserts like smoked chocolate.
Liz: And finally, we have the specialty malt, which adds character and individuality to your beers and foods. From biscuity notes to fruity undertones, these malts provide endless possibilities for creative brewing and culinary experimentation.
Chelsea: So, whether you're a beer enthusiast or a culinary explorer, understanding the impact of different malts is the key to unlocking a whole new world of flavors. Experiment, create, and savor the incredible transformation that diverse malts bring to your favorite beverages and culinary delights.
Liz: As always, in each pairing, the goal is to either complement or contrast the flavors of the dish with the hop profile. Thank you for tuning into our Brews n Bites segment today.
